Car Headlight Restoration Kit with Polymer Coating — a complete kit for bringing clouded, yellowed polycarbonate headlights back to clarity. The haze that builds on a headlight is oxidation of the plastic itself, and it costs real light output — restoring a headlight puts noticeably more light on the road, which makes this a safety job rather than a cosmetic one.

Why it is worth fitting

Headlight haze is easy to dismiss as an appearance problem until you drive an unlit road at night and realise how much of the beam is being lost. The plastic lens oxidises over years of ultraviolet exposure, and the resulting film scatters the light that the lamp produces, so the same bulb and the same reflector put markedly less light where you need it. The beam also becomes less defined, which causes glare for oncoming drivers. Replacing headlight units is expensive; restoring them is not, provided the job is finished properly. That is the point of including a polymer coating — the sanding and polishing stages restore the clarity, but without a protective layer the oxidation begins again within months. The coating is what makes the result last.

Key features

  • Treats the three usual headlight faults: scratches, yellowing and oxidation
  • Includes a polymer liquid coating to seal the restored surface and slow the return of the haze
  • Supplied in a portable aluminium alloy tool box with the full accessory set
  • Enough for both headlights from one kit
  • Dual power supply, so it can run from the vehicle or another supply depending on the accessories used
  • No specialist skill required — supplied with operating instructions
  • Restores light output as well as appearance, which is the safety benefit
  • Sealing stage included, unlike a polish-only kit that hazes back within a season

Will it fit?

Universal — it treats the lens rather than a vehicle-specific part, so it works on the great majority of cars built since the 1990s, which use polycarbonate or acrylic headlight lenses. It should not be used on glass headlights. Mask around the headlight before starting, because the abrasives used on the lens will damage surrounding paintwork if they touch it. If the haze is on the inside of the lens rather than the outside, restoration will not help and the unit needs replacing.

Fitting and first use

Wash the headlight and dry it. Mask the paintwork and the surrounding trim with tape, including the gap around the lens edge. Work through the grades in order, starting coarser and finishing finer, keeping the lens and the abrasive wet and moving rather than holding the tool in one place. Wipe the lens clean between grades so you can see the progress and so you do not carry coarse grit into the next stage. Once the lens is clear, dry it and apply the polymer coating evenly, following the instructions, and allow it to cure fully before driving. Do one headlight completely before starting the second, so you can compare the result.

Care and maintenance

Do not wash the car for the curing period stated in the instructions, and avoid polish or wax on the coated lens afterwards. Clean the headlights with plain water and a soft cloth rather than a solvent-based cleaner, which will attack the coating. Reapply the protective coating periodically as the manufacturer recommends, since that layer is what slows the oxidation returning. Wash road salt off headlights promptly in winter, as salt is hard on both the coating and the polycarbonate underneath.

Frequently asked questions

Will this work on badly clouded headlights?

It restores oxidation and yellowing on the outer surface of the lens. Very deep scratches or haze that has penetrated the plastic may not come out fully, and if the clouding is on the inside of the lens the unit needs replacing rather than restoring.

Does it work on glass headlights?

No. It is intended for polycarbonate and acrylic lenses, which is what most cars since the 1990s use.

How long does the result last?

The sanding and polishing stages restore the clarity; the polymer coating is what determines how long it lasts. Expect a well-applied coating to hold for months to a year, and reapply as recommended.

Do I need to mask the paintwork?

Yes, and it is not optional. The abrasives in the kit will damage surrounding paint if they contact it, so tape the edges before you start.
