Deli Preset Torque Wrench, Chromium-Vanadium Steel — a preset torque wrench in chromium-vanadium alloy steel, intended for jobs where a fastener has to be tightened to an exact figure — spark plugs, wheel bolts, sump plugs and cylinder head fasteners. Under-tightening a spark plug lets it work loose; over-tightening cracks the head. A torque wrench is the only way to know which you have done.

Why it is worth fitting

Most people tighten fasteners by feel, and feel is unreliable in exactly the situations where it matters. A spark plug has a crush washer that requires a specific figure — too little and it works loose and loses compression, too much and you strip the thread in an aluminium head, which turns a five-minute job into a cylinder head removal. Wheel bolts are worse: under-tightening risks a wheel coming loose, and over-tightening stretches the stud and distorts the brake disc. A torque wrench replaces guesswork with a measurement. The chromium-vanadium alloy steel matters for a tool that will be pulled hard repeatedly, and a click release at the set value is the practical mechanism for a preset type: you cannot easily over-apply the torque once it has clicked.

Key features

  • Chromium-vanadium alloy steel construction, built for repeated hard use
  • Adjustable to a set torque value, with a click release at the set point
  • Adjustable range suitable for spark plugs, wheel fasteners and engine work
  • Metric measurement system
  • Knurled handle for grip when setting the value and applying the torque
  • Preset mechanism clicks rather than continuing to apply force once the figure is reached
  • Suitable for cylinder head, sump plug and suspension fasteners as well as spark plugs
  • Comes in a protective case so the setting is not disturbed in storage

Will it fit?

Universal tool, but the two figures that matter are the drive size and the working range, and both must match the job. A spark plug needs a small torque figure; a wheel bolt needs a large one. Establish the torque specification for the fastener you are working on, from the vehicle handbook or a workshop manual, and check it sits comfortably inside the wrench’s working range — using a wrench at the very bottom or top of its range is less accurate. Confirm the drive size (commonly 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch) and that you have the correct socket to match.

Fitting and first use

Before use, set the wrench to the required value by unlocking the collar, turning the handle and then locking it again. Apply the torque with a smooth, steady pull on the handle rather than a jerk, and keep the wrench square to the fastener so you are measuring torque rather than a combination of torque and side load. Stop as soon as you feel or hear the click — continuing to pull after the click is what stretches fasteners. For a sequence of fasteners, such as wheel bolts or head bolts, work in the specified order and in stages rather than taking each one straight to full torque. Return the wrench to its lowest setting before storing it.

Care and maintenance

Always wind the setting back to its minimum before storing, because leaving a torque wrench set at a high value for months weakens the spring inside and the accuracy drifts. Store it in its case rather than loose in a toolbox where it can be dropped — a knock can affect calibration. Never use it as a breaker bar to loosen a tight fastener, which is the most common way a torque wrench is destroyed. Keep it away from moisture, and if the tool is used professionally or where accuracy matters, have it checked against a known standard periodically.

Frequently asked questions

What torque should I use for my car’s wheel bolts?

That comes from the vehicle handbook or the manufacturer’s specification, not from the tool. Different vehicles specify very different figures, and some require a torque sequence. Always look up the figure for your vehicle.

Can I use it to undo tight bolts?

No. A torque wrench is for tightening to a set value. Using it as a breaker bar overloads the mechanism and ruins the calibration. Use a separate bar or a socket wrench for loosening.

Does it need calibrating?

A torque wrench is a measuring instrument, and its accuracy can drift, particularly if it is stored set at a high value or has been dropped. For occasional home use this is rarely critical, but for professional use periodic checking is worth arranging.

Should I leave it set at the figure I use most?

No. Always return it to the lowest setting before storing it, otherwise the internal spring takes a set and the accuracy drifts.
