Buffing King Foam Polishing Pads, 5″ / 6″ — foam polishing pads that mount on a hook-and-loop backing plate on a rotary polisher or angle grinder. Different foam densities and abrasive grades do different jobs — a firmer pad with a coarser grade cuts oxidation and scratches, while a softer pad with a finer grade finishes the surface and brings up gloss.

Why it is worth fitting

Hand polishing paint reaches a point where effort stops making a difference. Removing oxidation, swirl marks or a faded layer of lacquer needs the pad to move across the panel quickly and consistently, and that is what a machine provides. A machine is only half the job, though: the pad determines whether the work cuts or finishes. A firm foam pad with a coarse grade removes material and levels the surface; a soft pad with a fine grade polishes that surface to a gloss without putting the scratches back. Having a set that covers the range is what makes machine polishing work, and pads are consumables — they clog, they lose their edge, and they need replacing long before the machine does. Six colours across three grades is the practical way to keep track of which pad does what.

Key features

  • Fits standard hook-and-loop backing plates on rotary polishers and angle grinders
  • Available in 5-inch and 6-inch diameters
  • Several grades available — 100, 200 and 220 grit, plus ungraded finishing pads
  • Six colours, which is the usual way to keep grades apart in a kit
  • Compressible foam follows panel curvature instead of burning through edges
  • Cylinder shape with a rounded edge that is less likely to catch on a swage line
  • Washable and reusable if rinsed out after each use
  • Different densities let you cut, refine and finish with the same backing plate

Will it fit?

Universal — the pad attaches to the backing plate rather than to the vehicle, so there is nothing vehicle-specific. Two things to establish before ordering: whether your machine takes a 5-inch or a 6-inch pad, and whether the backing plate is hook-and-loop rather than a screw-on arbor. Match the pad diameter to the backing plate, not the other way round: a pad larger than the plate has an unsupported edge that will wobble and can damage paint.

Fitting and first use

Fit the pad to the backing plate and check it is centred, because an off-centre pad vibrates and produces an uneven finish. Apply polish to the pad or the panel in small amounts rather than a large blob, and spread it at low speed before working it. Keep the machine moving — hold it in one place and the friction will burn the paint. Work in overlapping passes over a small area at a time, and clean the pad or change to a fresh one as it loads up with polish residue, because a clogged pad stops cutting and starts smearing. Use a soft pad for the final pass and a firm one for correction.

Care and maintenance

Rinse pads in warm water with a little mild detergent after use, squeeze them out and let them dry face-up so they keep their shape. Never leave a pad soaking, and never put them in a washing machine or a tumble dryer, which destroys the foam and the hook backing. Store them in a bag rather than loose in a toolbox, where grit gets embedded in the foam and then scratches the next panel you polish. Replace a pad when the foam has gone soft or the edge has broken down — a worn pad is the usual reason a polish stops cutting partway through a job.

Frequently asked questions

Which pad should I use first?

Start with a firm pad and a coarse grade to correct the surface, then step down to a softer pad and a finer grade to refine. Finishing with the wrong pad puts back the marks you just removed.

Do these fit any machine?

They fit machines with a hook-and-loop backing plate of the matching diameter. Check whether you have a 5-inch or 6-inch plate, and confirm it is hook-and-loop rather than a screw-on arbor.

How long does a pad last?

It depends on how much you polish. A pad is a consumable and will load up and lose its edge after a few panels. Rinsing it promptly and letting it dry properly extends its life considerably.

Are they suitable for a beginner?

Yes, provided the machine speed is controlled. Working with a foam pad is more forgiving than a wool pad, but keeping the machine moving and using the right grade are still what prevent damage.

Please read before ordering

These pads attach to a hook-and-loop backing plate. The manufacturer lists the compatible machine as an angle grinder, and an angle grinder turns far faster than a dual-action polisher. If you are using one, run it at the lowest speed the machine allows — a foam pad driven too fast will overheat the paint or throw the pad. A variable-speed polisher is the safer choice, and whichever machine you use, keep it moving rather than holding it in one place.
