RCJ 55W 4500LM LED Car Headlight Conversion Kit — a 55 W LED headlight conversion bulb producing 4500 lumens at a 6000 K white colour temperature, for drivers upgrading from halogen. The 9–30 V driver means it works across cars, vans and trucks, and the IP68 rating keeps water out of the housing through rain, spray and pressure washing.

Why it is worth fitting

Halogen headlights lose brightness gradually, so you rarely notice that the light on the road is not what it was. The bigger problem is colour: a warm yellow halogen bulb lights the road ahead poorly compared with a white light at the same wattage, which is why the area beyond the dipped beam feels short on an unlit road at night. This kit replaces the halogen bulb with an LED unit rated at 4500 lumens and 6000 K, close to daylight, so the contrast between lit surface and unlit verge improves. A 9–30 V driver keeps output stable whether the vehicle is running 12 V or 24 V, and the IP68 seal and aluminium body address the two things that kill retrofit LEDs — water ingress and heat.

Key features

  • 4500 lumens per kit at a 6000 K white colour temperature, close to daylight
  • 55 W per bulb with an aluminium body to dissipate heat rather than trap it
  • IP68 waterproof rated for rain, road spray and pressure washing
  • 9–30 V input suitable for cars, vans, trucks and off-road vehicles
  • Lifespan rated at over 60,000 hours — effectively the life of the vehicle
  • Wide working temperature range of −40 °C to +105 °C
  • Universal retrofit fitment for halogen-to-LED upgrade applications
  • Stable output across the voltage range, so brightness does not drop with the engine off

Will it fit?

Universal retrofit fitment for vehicles running 9–30 V, including commercial and special-purpose vehicles. The critical detail is the bulb holder: H1, H4, H7, H11 and the other fittings are not interchangeable, so confirm your original bulb type before ordering and the matching set will be supplied. Headlamps with a projector lens take a retrofit LED far better than a reflector housing, where light scatter can be excessive.

Fitting and first use

Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before starting — halogen bulbs run hot enough to burn. Access the rear of the headlamp from the engine bay, unclip or unscrew the bulb retainer, and unplug the original bulb. Fit the LED bulb, checking that the emitting chips face the same direction as the original filament, which is what keeps the beam pattern correct. Connect the driver, then the original connector. The driver and heatsink usually need to sit inside the headlamp housing or the rubber cap, so test the fit before closing everything up. Check the beam aim afterwards.

Care and maintenance

Do not touch the LED chips or the lens with bare fingers; oil left on the surface causes hot spots and shortens life. Keep the heatsink clear of debris, because these units rely on the heatsink to shed heat and a blocked one will overheat the driver. If a bulb flickers after fitting, the usual cause is the vehicle’s bulb-failure warning system, which may need a canbus adapter rather than indicating a faulty bulb. Check the beam pattern annually and readjust after any headlamp removal.

Frequently asked questions

Will these pass an MOT or a roadworthiness test?

It depends where you drive. In several European countries and in the UK, fitting an LED bulb into a headlamp that was type-approved for halogen means the lamp is no longer approved, regardless of the bulb’s own quality. Check your local rules before fitting these to a road vehicle.

Do I need a canbus adapter?

If the vehicle monitors bulb resistance, an LED bulb may trigger a warning light or flicker. Many cars need a canbus adapter, so tell us your model and year and we will advise.

Will the beam pattern still be correct?

The beam depends mostly on the headlamp housing. In a projector lens the pattern is usually maintained when the chips are oriented correctly. In a reflector housing, results vary and the aim should be checked afterwards.

How long do they last compared with halogen?

The unit is rated above 60,000 hours, against roughly 500 to 1,000 hours for a halogen bulb, so in normal use they effectively outlast the vehicle.
