Snap-On Protective Hubcap for Steel Wheels — a snap-on hubcap that covers a bare steel wheel, tidying up the look of winter wheels or a car that has lost its original trim. The polypropylene shell resists rust and road salt, which is the reason steel wheels look shabby after a couple of winters.
Why it is worth fitting
Steel wheels are used for winter tyres for good reasons — they are cheap, robust and shrug off a kerb better than alloy — but they are not attractive, and over a winter or two the rim picks up surface rust and brake dust staining. A set of hubcaps is the cheapest way to make the car look presentable on its winter wheels, and the same applies to any older car whose original trims have gone missing one by one. Because these are polypropylene with a painted finish, they resist the salt and grit that a winter throws at them, and they press on without tools. The other practical benefit is protection: a hubcap takes the scuffs from kerbs that would otherwise mark the wheel rim itself.

Will it fit?
The fitting is universal in principle, but hubcaps are sized by wheel diameter and retained by the shape of the steel rim, so two measurements matter. Measure your wheel diameter in inches — most car steel wheels are between 13 and 17 inches — and check the rim lip style, because a hubcap grips that lip and a rim without the right profile will not hold one. A photograph of the bare wheel is the quickest way to confirm. Note that hubcaps are not interchangeable between wheel sizes: a 15-inch cap will not stay on a 16-inch rim.
Fitting and first use
Clean the wheel rim first, because grit between the cap and the rim is what stops it seating fully. Line the hubcap up with the valve stem as a reference point, then press firmly around the rim with the heel of your hand until it clicks into place at each section. Work around the circumference rather than pressing one side hard, which distorts the cap. Check it is fully seated all the way round and that no part stands proud. Remove it by prising gently with a flat tool against the rim, not against the tyre.
Care and maintenance
Wash them with the rest of the car and remove them once or twice a year to clean the wheel behind, because dirt trapped between the cap and the rim is what encourages corrosion on the rim itself. Avoid parking hard against kerbs, which is how caps get cracked and lost. Check they are still tight after a tyre change or after hitting a pothole. A cap that starts to work loose will come off at speed, so refit it properly rather than leaving it to rattle.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know which size to order?
Measure the wheel diameter in inches and check the rim lip profile. Most car steel wheels are 13 to 17 inches. Send us a photograph of the bare wheel if you are unsure.
Will they stay on at motorway speed?
A correctly seated cap on a compatible rim will stay on. Most lost hubcaps were never fully pressed into place to begin with, so check the seating all the way round.
Do they protect against rust?
They cover the wheel face, so the painted surface is shielded from much of the salt and spray. They slow the appearance of rust rather than preventing corrosion inside the rim.
Can I use them on alloy wheels?
No. They are designed for steel rims with the correct retaining lip, and alloy wheels take their own centre caps.
