EPDM Rubber Car Door Edge Guard Strip — a push-on rubber strip that fits over the folded edge of a car door. Its job is to stop door-edge paint chips — the small rust rings that start when a door is opened against a wall or a neighbouring car in a car park.
Why it is worth fitting
A door edge takes more knocks than any other part of a car and it is the hardest place to repair. Opening a door into a wall, a pillar or another car chips the paint on the very edge, and because that edge is a folded seam, the chip exposes bare metal in exactly the place where rust establishes first. A small chip becomes a rust blister becomes a repaint. A push-on rubber strip covers that edge and absorbs the impact instead. EPDM is the material that matters here: it is the same compound used for car door seals precisely because it stays soft in cold weather, whereas a PVC strip hardens as the temperature drops, which is exactly when you need it to give. It also fits without adhesive, so it can be removed without damaging the paint.
Key features
- Push-on profile that grips the door edge without adhesive
- EPDM rubber stays flexible in cold weather, unlike PVC which stiffens and cracks
- Protects the door edge from chips, which is where rust usually starts on a car
- Also suitable for boot lids, bonnet edges and tailgates
- No drilling and no glue — it clips on and can be taken off without trace
- Can be cut to length with a knife for a neat finish at the door corners
- Absorbs the impact when a door is opened against a wall or another car
- Supplied by the metre, so you can cover just the doors or the whole car

Will it fit?
Universal — the strip is sold by length and cut to fit, so it suits any vehicle. Measure the total length of the edges you want to protect before ordering: four doors plus the boot lid and bonnet adds up quickly, and it is worth ordering a little extra to allow for the corners. Check the thickness of the door edge as well, because the channel has to grip it — on vehicles with unusually thick or moulded edges the strip may not seat fully.
Fitting and first use
Clean the door edge and remove any wax or polish, which will stop the strip gripping. Start at the top of the door and press the channel over the edge, working downwards a few centimetres at a time and squeezing the profile closed as you go. Cut the strip with a sharp knife and a firm, single stroke rather than sawing at it, and cut slightly long rather than short so the end tucks around the corner. On the corners, make a small V notch on the inner face so the strip can follow the bend without kinking. Push the profile fully closed along its whole length, because a strip that is only partly seated will work loose.
Care and maintenance
Check the strip is still fully seated after a car wash or a spell of very cold weather, when a partly fitted section can work free. Clean it with the rest of the car; a rubber conditioner keeps it soft and black rather than grey. If the strip starts to lift in one place, reseat it while it is warm rather than pulling it off and starting again. Inspect the door edge underneath when you clean the car, since the guard is there to take the damage and it is worth knowing whether it has.
Frequently asked questions
Is EPDM better than PVC for this?
Yes, for a door edge it is the better choice. EPDM stays flexible in cold weather, whereas PVC stiffens as it gets colder, which is exactly when impact protection is needed most.
Will it damage the paint?
No. It is a push-on profile with no adhesive, so it can be removed without leaving residue or pulling paint. Clean the edge before fitting so nothing is trapped underneath.
How much do I need?
Measure the edges you want to cover. Four doors plus a boot lid is typically several metres, so measure rather than estimate, and allow a little extra for the corners.
Can I use it on a boot lid or bonnet?
Yes, and it is worth doing, since the boot lid edge suffers the same kind of damage when it is opened against a wall or a garage door.
