Will it fit?

Universal for manual-transmission cars where the gear lever uses one of the four listed thread sizes. Three things to check before ordering. First, whether the gear lever has a lift-up or push-down reverse collar: those cars need a knob designed to work with that mechanism, and a plain screw-on knob may prevent reverse from engaging or leave the collar sticking. Second, how the original knob comes off — some are screwed on, others are bonded, and a few are secured by a lock nut underneath. Third, the opening in the gear gaiter, since a 50 mm ball is larger than some factory knobs and may not sit cleanly in the surround.

Fitting and first use

Remove the original knob by turning it anticlockwise, or by releasing the lock nut or retaining clip underneath, depending on the car. Once removed, check the thread on the lever and select the matching brass adapter from the box. Thread the adapter onto the lever first, then screw the knob onto the adapter. Do not over-tighten — the adapter is brass and the lever is steel, and forcing it can strip the softer metal. Set the knob so any logo or design faces the driver, then tighten gently by hand. Check that all gears engage, including reverse, and that the knob does not foul the gaiter or the centre console through the full movement of the lever.

Care and maintenance

Wipe the lacquered surface with a soft damp cloth; use a matt finish product rather than a glossy polish, which makes it slippery in the hand. Avoid solvent-based cleaners, which attack the lacquer. Check the knob is still tight after a few weeks of driving, since a knob that works loose will not shift cleanly. Keep hand creams and sanitisers off the surface where possible, as these dull a lacquered finish over time. If the adapter works loose, remove the knob and reseat the adapter rather than tightening the knob further, which overloads the brass thread.
