Carmonsons Stainless Steel Pedal Cover Set — a stainless steel pedal cover set for the brake, clutch and accelerator that replaces the plain factory rubber pads with a drilled metal face. The result is better grip under the sole in wet conditions and a more positive pedal feel than rubber that has worn smooth.

Why it is worth fitting

Factory pedal pads are rubber, and rubber polishes smooth with use — which is exactly the opposite of what you want on the pedals, and worst on the brake. A wet shoe on a glazed rubber pad has noticeably less grip than a new one. These covers put a drilled stainless steel plate over the pedal, with a raised pattern and holes that give the sole an edge to grip, so the surface does not depend on rubber staying soft. There is an aesthetic side to it too: steel pedal plates are the interior detail you see every time you open the door, and they cost far less than any other change that looks like a factory upgrade. Fitting is non-destructive, so nothing is drilled and the original pedal is not modified.

Key features

  • Stainless steel face with a raised anti-slip pattern
  • Waterproof and non-slip, which matters most on a wet day
  • Non-destructive fitting — it goes over the existing pedal with no drilling
  • Restores grip where the original rubber pad has worn smooth and glazed
  • Sports-style interior upgrade that is visible every time you get in the car
  • Available as a three-pedal set for manual cars and a two-pedal set for automatics
  • Drilled face also lets water pass through rather than sitting on the surface
  • Screwed or clamped onto the pedal body, so the covers can be removed and refitted

Will it fit?

The pedal plate shapes shown are for the Lexus ES from 2012 to 2016. Pedal geometry differs considerably between models and between manual and automatic versions, so please confirm your vehicle, its year and its transmission type before ordering. An automatic needs two pedals rather than three. On some cars the accelerator is a plastic organ-type pedal rather than a hinged arm, and those need a different bracket, so send us a photograph of the pedals if you are unsure.

Fitting and first use

Work in a well-lit area with the engine off and the key out of the ignition. Prise the original rubber pad off the brake and clutch pedals — on most cars it peels away from the metal pedal plate — and clean the plate so the new cover sits flat. Fit the steel cover over the pedal and secure it with the supplied screws and clamps, tightening evenly so the plate is not distorted. The accelerator cover usually clamps over the existing pedal rather than replacing the rubber. Before driving, press each pedal through its full travel and confirm there is no interference, that the cover cannot catch on the floor mat, and that the pedals still return fully. Test the brakes at low speed before normal driving.

Care and maintenance

Check the fixing screws periodically, particularly after the first week and then at each service, because a pedal cover that works loose is a genuine safety issue. Wipe the steel face with a damp cloth and a little metal polish if you want it bright; the drilled holes are best cleared with a small brush so they do not silt up. Avoid oil-based products on the pedal face, for obvious reasons. In winter, road salt carried in on shoes will mark the finish if it is left to sit, so rinse and dry them occasionally.

Frequently asked questions

Are pedal covers on the brake safe?

They can be, provided they are the correct shape for your pedals, fitted securely and tested through full pedal travel. A loose or poorly fitted cover on a brake pedal is dangerous, so this is worth fitting carefully rather than quickly.

Do I need to drill anything?

No. The fitting is non-destructive and uses the pedal’s own structure. The original rubber pads can be refitted if you want to return the car to standard.

Will they fit my automatic?

An automatic has two pedals, so order the two-pedal set. Some automatics also have a foot-operated parking brake, which is a different pedal entirely.

Will they affect the car’s warranty or an inspection?

Non-destructive covers that are securely fitted do not modify the pedal mechanism. If you are unsure, check with your garage, since pedal condition is part of a roadworthiness inspection.
